Château Margaux

The most elegant and perhaps most refined of the great reds of the Médoc. The exceptional quality achieved for well over 30 years is down to the dedication of the owners, the Mentzelopoulos family and the general manager Paul Pontallier. The vineyard is sizeable at 92 hectares, 12 of which are planted to Sauvignon Blanc, source of a brilliant barrel-fermented and aged white Pavillon Blanc de Château Margaux. The 80 hectares of red grapes comprise roughly 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and the balance made up of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The terroir consists of a gravel top soil over limestone providing perfect drainage and growing conditions. Wooden fermenters are preferred over stainless steel tanks because Pontallier believes they contribute to richer, rounder and more polished wines. Both the Grand Vin and impressive second label, Pavillon Rouge de Margaux, are aged for between 18 and 24 months in barrel.
