Alsace

Alsace

This pretty region fought over for centuries is a fine combination of Germanic and French cultures. The warm dry slopes near the Vosges mountains have one of the lowest rainfalls in France and produces seven different single variety wines. From fresh dry Pinot Blanc, Sylvaners and intense Rieslings to rich spicy Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and light Pinot Noir. There are some great growers, like Trimbach and Hugel, who have over generations perfected  their own styles from different soils, grapes and levels of ripeness. These are honest, high quality, superb value wines that are easy to appreciate by themselves or with haut cuisine, including Asian.
