Alsace
This pretty region is a fine combination of Germanic and French cultures. The warm dry slopes, near the Vosges Mountains, have one of the lowest rainfalls in France and produce seven different single variety wines. From fresh, dry Pinot Blanc, Sylvaners and intense Rieslings to rich spicy Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and light Pinot Noir. There are some great growers, like Trimbach and Hugel, who have over generations perfected their own styles from different soils, grapes and levels of ripeness. These are honest, high quality, superb value wines that are easy to appreciate on their own or with food, including Asian cuisine.
