Bordeaux
"He who aspires to be a serious wine drinker must drink claret." Samuel Johnson
Bordeaux is largest producer of wine in France and the most important region in the world by trade value. The world's most sought after grand cru chateaux stem from the Médoc, Graves, Saint Emilion and Pomerol appellations. However, most claret is made from neighbouring good value areas bearing the more humble AOC Bordeaux or AOC Bordeaux Supérieur classifications. Like the grand crus, they are made from the indigenous Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet franc and Merlot grapes for the reds, with Sauvignon Blanc and Semillion grapes for the dry or sweet whites.
