"He who aspires to be a serious wine drinker must drink claret." Samuel Johnson
The world's most sought after Grand Cru Châteaux stem from the Médoc, Graves, Saint-Émilion and Pomerol appellations. However, most claret is made from neighbouring areas bearing the more humble AOC Bordeaux or AOC Bordeaux Supérieur classifications. Like the Grand Crus, they are made from the indigenous Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grapes for the reds and Sauvignon Blanc and Semillion grapes for the whites.
