Germany

With thirteen defined regions, dating back to the Roman era, Germany is the eight largest wine producer in the world and most famous for it’s white wines, in particular the Riesling grape. Britain has long been their biggest export market and the top vineyards of the Mosel, Rheingau and Rheinhessen produced the most expensive and desirable wines a century ago. Since the second world war, cheaper Müller-Thurgau based brands have dominated the market, whilst the best Qualitätswein mit Prädikat (QmP) (superior quality wine) achieved the highest prices within Germany.  With increasing demand for better quality, lower alcohol dry styles, there has been a sudden revival for exports in the premium sector.
