Loire

Loire

With over 65 appellations along the 300 mile longest river in France, it is not surprising to find a wide variation in wine styles, made from a dozen grape different grape varieties. The Loire valley is must famous for it’s definitive expressions of Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Melon de Bougogne and Cabernet Franc.  From calcareous soils in Sancerre to flinty granitic Silex soils in Pouilly Fumé, we see contrasting styles of Sauvignon Blanc. In Vouvray one can find light sec Chenins for early drinking, beside rich, sweet ‘moelleux’ versions that age for many decades. Nearby, the same grape maybe used in sparkling wines.  These classic wines complement the best seafood, cheeses and foie gras.
