Italy 2015 & 2016 - A brace of stunning vintages
The latest releases from Piedmont’s 2016 vintage show great promise. We have tried many gorgeous Barbaresco and Barolo wines that stand out from other recent vintages. The reds are ripe with lovely fruit purity, finishing cool without the alcoholic heat found in warmer vintages. These have structure, fine tannins, energising acidity and real balance. Several producers explained that their vines suffered no heatwave stress in 2016. The summer and autumn weather temperatures were warm and moderated by occasional light showers. The days were mainly sunny and clear with low humidity. This is a beautiful vintage and one which has created expressive reds that precisely mirror their terroir. The best will age effortlessly for many years.
The 2015 and 2016s Tuscans have been largely successful across the region, benefiting from similar climatic fortunes. The 2015s are generally quite forward with concentrated ripe fruit. The summer temperatures were above average but light August showers refreshed the vines and preserved their fruit integrity. After a wet winter, the 2016 summer was steady, dry and warm with cool nights running up to harvest in September and October. The best reds have vibrant acidity, expressive aromatics, fruit purity, fine tannins and real elegance.
