Bordeaux 2016 Reappraised
After release of the new Bordeaux 2016 ratings by Lisa Perrotti Brown for The Wine Advocate, we are pleased to share some of the highlights including several 100 pointers. These are her bottled scores or ‘’En Livrables’’compared to ‘’En Primeur’’scores by Neil Martin or James Suckling.
Last November we tried most from bottle at the Unions des Grands Crus tasting in London. Surprisingly, many tasted as good as their cask samples from eighteen months earlier. These are beautiful, classically structured clarets from both banks of the Gironde. Quality is less homogeneous than in 2015, as some sites suffered from drought, but there are many successes across all appellations and crus. The Cabernet dominant wines excelled most of all. A long ripening period resulted in wines with cool vibrant fruit, ripe textured tannins, high acidity and moderate alcohols. The best wines precisely mirror their terroir and are perfectly balanced.
