Château Cheval Blanc
One of the two great Growth’s of Saint-Emilion and considerably larger than the other, Château Ausone. The property is run by Pierre Lurton who also looks after Château D’Yquem. It is located close to the appellation boundary with Pomerol and the wine has a high proportion of Cabernet Franc. This provides a very elegant, cedary edge to the wine as well as tremendous richness and density with dark complex fruit and fine velvety tannins. The gravely, sandy top soils are mixed with clay and this provides for wines with this combination of sumptuous richness and tight, finely structured tannins. Vinification is modern with fermentation and an extended vatting in stainless steel tanks followed by ageing in new oak for around 18 months. The wine is very age-worthy.
