Château Cheval Blanc 1928

Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux
Colour
93

"The 1928 Cheval Blanc is a fascinating wine. This bottle was bought at auction in the UK (Dreweatts). Upon initial pouring there is some turbidity and the nose does not seem decrepit, but certainly commensurate with its age, musty with mothballs. It's a trap. Leaving it to one side and returning 10 minutes later you are confronted with an entirely different wine. It manifests wonderful clarity with vestiges of dark earthy fruit, autumn leaves, brown sugar and leather. The palate also gets its act together, demonstrating the tannic structure that marked this vintage, but of course, now softened and malleable in the mouth. There is a core of dusky dark berry fruit mixed with bay leaf and even a touch of Indian spice, remaining linear but clean and fresh towards the long finish. You end up falling for its charms, and then scold it for fooling you earlier on. Tasted February 2014." Neal Martin
