Château Cheval Blanc 1950

Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux
Colour

"Enfin! My first Right Bank ’50! It is extremely dark in colour considering its age. The nose is certainly a little volatile at first pour and a touch volatile on the palate, a wine frayed at the edges with age. But, and it is an important but, this ’50 Cheval really improves in the glass, losing that oxidative element and revealing some heady dark chocolate, cloves and earthy aromas, the Cabernet Franc driving it along. That also lends the palate its structure with notes of cloves, dark chocolate, almost lactic in texture. Very tarry yet sweet on the lingering, rustic finish. I would not have said this at first pour, but I think this just has the edge over the Figeac ’50. Impressive." Neal Martin
