I had a couple of good, but not great bottles of the ’61 Maison Drouhin Musigny, which I reported on in the article on the domaine’s Musigny last year, but based on this magnificent example, neither of those bottles appears to have been pristine. However, I am very pleased to report on a perfect example, as this wine exploded from the glass in a blaze of red cherries, fraises de bois, orange zest, glorious minerality, a touch of iron, woodsmoke, rose petals and a pungent topnote of exotic spices. On the palate the wine is medium-full, round and flawlessly balanced, with beautiful sweetness and intensity at the core, haunting focus, and great acids and grip on the
meltingly tannic, utterly profound and ethereal finish. Musigny at its best has few competitors, and this was Musigny at its best. A brilliant wine. 2006-2025. 96 John Gilman, Issue 108 (View from the Cellar)

"I have tried this wine eight times now in the last few years with six of them showing spicy but tired and slighly stewed aromas and ripe, round and blurry flavors without the distinction one expects from an excellent vintage and the great terroir; note that several bottles suffered from low fills. The last two bottles however were nothing short of brilliant with a bricked through appearance though there is still a ruby center. A positively gorgeous and wonderfully complex nose of spice, earth, sous-bois complements perfectly the silky and pure middle weight flavors that still possess solid punch and power, all wrapped in an almost racy and still vibrant finish. This is not an especially big or powerful wine but it is focused and detailed, built on a base of minerality that it delivers with obvious class and grace. At its best the '61 Musigny is a lovely effort that is still drinking beautifully if you can find a perfectly stored example though I again note that I have had many bottles that were less than stellar." 94 Allen Meadows (Burghound)
