Musigny, Grand Cru, Joseph Drouhin 1993

Côte de Nuits, Burgundy
Colour

93

"Like its '91 counterpart (see herein) there is still no sign of bricking though the rim is now lightening a bit. This is an absolutely gorgeous effort with its highly expressive nose of now mostly secondary aromas of cassis and plum that is nuanced by smoke, floral, and a wonderful variety of spice elements. The dense, serious and quite powerful medium weight possess excellent precision and punch before culminating in a still moderately firm finish that delivers excellent persistence. This is an overtly muscular wine, and particularly so in the context of what is typical for Drouhin, and while it is by no means rustic it would be apt to describe it as perhaps less elegant than certain other vintages. In sum, the '93 Musigny is a genuinely beautiful effort that could be approached now with pleasure but one that should drink superbly well for years to come. Note that I have experienced some bottle variation though somewhat curiously the variability has more to do with the character of the palate feel as some bottles are almost delicate and don't closely resemble what I describe above. Odd really particularly since this is a wine that I know very well having purchased and cellared it myself." Burghound
