Pétrus 1948

Pomerol, Bordeaux
Colour

"The 1948 Petrus is a vintage that I have only encountered on one occasion as part of a vertical. It has a deep mahogany colour with a thin tawny rim. The nose is dense and broody with black dusty fruit and touches of raisin, missing the definition of the greatest vintages such as 1959 or 1961. The palate is powerful, tannic and sinewy with notable rough, coarse tannin. There is a Médoc-like personality to this 1948, quite linear in style with cedar and tobacco infusing the finish. Bottles may now be reaching the end of their lifespan and perhaps Vieux-Château-Certan produced a better 1948. Yet it remains an unheralded Petrus, one rarely seen nowadays, that wears its heart on its sleeve." Neal Martin
